Next Wednesday, 12 September, Canal de Isabel II and the Auschwitz exhibition, in partnership with the Sefarad Centre and the Jewish Community of Madrid, will hold an exclusive education seminar for teachers. Entitled Teaching the Holocaust: How to explain the inexplicable, the seminar will be led by the international expert Paul Salmons, curator of the exhibition.

The seminar is open to primary and secondary teachers and people involved in the education sector. It will discuss the Holocaust from the perspective of education and how this is fundamental to ensure respect for and awareness of human rights. The event will discuss the historical context on the Holocaust, with an emphasis on supporting pupilswhen it comes to this complex and challenging emotional past.
Based on the exhibition, the event will explore good practices for teaching and learning about the Holocaust. It will consider the implications of these guidelines in the classroom and analyse how they have influenced the curation of the exhibition. Time will also be allowed for discussion and questions. The event will also involve the participation of Raúl Fernández Vítores, responsible for the Shoah Teaching Guide (Guía didáctica de la Shoá).
The seminar will be complemented by a guided tour of the Paul Salmons exhibition by Paul Salmons. The tour will be in English with simultaneous interpretation. Places are limited to 30 teachers. Paul Salmons is curator of the Auschwitz exhibition and Programme Director of the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education, part of the Education Institute at University College London. Throughout his career he has served as educational adviser to many international projects, including United Nations International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and is the lead author of the manual How to teach about the Holocaust, the standard text in the field.
