For the first time, the groundbreaking exhibition Auschwitz. Not Long Ago. Not Far Away. will be presented in Canada, hosted by one of the nation’s most prominent cultural institutions, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM).
Developed by Musealia in collaboration with the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, the exhibition has been lauded worldwide for its depth and impact. It features over 500 original objects from the collections of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and more than 20 international museums and institutions. These artifacts—displayed in Canada for the first time—offer an unparalleled window into one of humanity’s darkest chapters
The collaboration with the Royal Ontario Museum is a significant milestone. Known for its dedication to cultural preservation and education, the ROM provides the perfect setting to host this transformative experience. Josh Basseches, ROM Director & CEO, reflects on the exhibition:
Carefully curated by an expert panel that includes Dr. Robert Jan van Pelt, Dr. Paul Salmons, and Dr. Michael Berenbaum, the exhibition takes visitors on a deeply moving intellectual journey. It sheds light on how Auschwitz came into being, its devastating legacy, and its enduring impact on our collective worldview.
By opening at the Royal Ontario Museum, the exhibition seeks to engage Canadian audiences in its mission to remember, learn, and honor the memories of those who perished during the Holocaust. It emphasizes that the lessons of history must never be forgotten and that it is our collective responsibility to ensure such atrocities are never repeated.
Open from January 10th until September 1st 2025. For more information, visit www.rom.on.ca.
